Prop firm EA rules: run a gold robot without breaking limits

Passing a prop firm challenge is not about maximizing return. It is about surviving the rules long enough to hit the profit target. This checklist shows how to configure an XAUUSD EA for that goal.

Know the three hard numbers

Every challenge publishes a daily loss limit, a maximum trailing or static drawdown, and a profit target. Write these down before you open the strategy panel.

Set the robot's internal daily loss limit well below the firm's limit. If the firm allows 5%, configure the EA to stop at 3%. Slippage and spread spikes can push a borderline trade over the edge.

Position sizing for the drawdown rule

Size every trade so that three losses in a row still leave a safety buffer. A common mistake is to set risk per trade based on the profit target instead of the daily loss limit.

On a 100,000 USD challenge with a 5% daily loss limit, risking 0.5% per trade gives you room for several losing trades before the safety switch trips.

News and session filters

Gold reacts violently to US inflation, employment and rate decisions. Many firms prohibit or restrict trading around these releases. A news filter that pauses the robot before and after high-impact events protects both the account and the rules.

Restrict trading to the London-New York overlap for the best liquidity and the lowest chance of abnormal slippage.

Consistency and copy-trading rules

Some firms enforce consistency rules, such as a maximum percentage of profit from a single trade or a minimum number of trading days. A robot that hits the target in one big trade may still fail the challenge.

Check whether copy trading or third-party EAs are allowed. If they are restricted, running any purchased EA can breach the agreement.

Test before you pay

Run the robot on the firm's demo or trial account with the exact settings for at least two weeks. Compare the realized drawdown against the rule you must respect.

Only move to a paid challenge once the demo results show you can stay inside the limits comfortably. No configuration guarantees a pass.

FAQ

Can I use any EA on a prop firm challenge?

Not necessarily. Each firm has its own rules about expert advisors, copy trading and automated strategies. Always read the current terms before attaching a robot.

What is the safest risk setting for a prop firm EA?

Set risk per trade low enough that three consecutive losses stay inside roughly half of the daily loss limit. This leaves room for slippage and spread spikes.

Should I trade news with a prop firm EA?

Most firms restrict or discourage trading around major news. A news filter that pauses the robot 15 minutes before and after high-impact events keeps you inside the rules.
